Forget Serena Williams. The American player in the U.S. Open women’s singles tournament that everyone is talking about right now is 15-year-old Catherine Cartan “CiCi” Bellis, who defeated 12 seed Dominika Cibulkova 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 today.
Bellis won the USTA Girls’ 18s National Championship two weeks ago to receive a wild card to the Open. She is the youngest winner of the USTA Girls’ 18s tournament since Lindsay Davenport in 1991. We’re not sure how Bellis will perform in the rest of the Open, but one thing is pretty certain: today was only the beginning of something great for American tennis.
