Discover What Traits from the Top Tennis Pros Are Worth Imitating

The process of learning the game of tennis can take quite a while. In fact, I’d argue when it comes to tennis, you never stop learning. Though in all likelihood you will never reach the heights of the top pros, it’s impossible not to admire them. As tennis fans we are constantly exposed to matches whether it be through highlights online, matches on TV or catching a tournament live. Each player on tour is of top quality, but it becomes apparent very quickly some players excel at particular aspects of the game more so than others. Being able to perfectly emulate them may be difficult, yet there are some skills from particular players you would be wise to take notice of if you are looking to take your, or your child’s, game to the next level.

Nadal → Footwork/Mobility

Rafael Nadal, the current No. 1 ranked player in the world, is known for his outstanding movement on the court. Sure, you can’t really be taught freakish athleticism, but footwork is something you can work on. The way in which he is constantly moving with his feet always in perfect position, allows him to reach balls and hit unexpected winners from otherwise hopeless situations.

Wawrinka → Backhand

If you or your child wants to learn a one handed backhand, you’d be smart to watch the Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka. Though the one handed backhand in professional tennis, as well as recreational tennis, is not as prevalent as the two handed, it gives Wawrinka an advantage on tour. He is able to generate substantial power and topspin with his backhand, which is nearly unmatched (see Roger Federer). Besides the fact that it keeps even the top players on their back foot, it is also one of the most beautiful strokes out there.

Juan Martin Del Potro → Forehand

With a 110 mph serve Juan Martin Del Potro, has one of the most aggressive and threatening forehands on the professional tour. Instead of using the traditional western grip, Del Potro prefers the eastern grip allowing him to produce significantly more spin. Though his giant frame is part of the reason he is able to generate so much power, his technique is really what makes this stroke such a threat.

Murray → Defensive Player

Is your child not the most aggressive of players? Don’t worry, because Andy Murray has proved you don’t necessarily have to be one to be a successful player. Even though Murray has gotten more aggressive as the years have gone on, he made his name on tour grinding out points with ruthless efficiency. It takes patience, endurance and steady technique to keep a rally going and ultimately force the opponent into an error.

Andy Roddick → Best serve

Holding records with the fastest serves in the Davis Cup as well as in a Grand Slam, Andy Roddick is the one to watch when when you or your child wants to improve your serve. He combined  speed and spin like no other player on tour (check out the PowerShares series now that he’s retired) and in turn was able to generate serves that averaged 118mph and 2500 rpm. Watch his knee and foot movement as it gives the powerful leg drive into the shot.

Michael Llodra → Net play

If your child is developing a decent volley and you want him or her to develop a playing advantage against other players, focus on serve and volley play. Though Michael Llodra is ranked No. 147 in the world now (was previously ranking #21 in 2011), he is one of the few players these days who utilizes a classic serve and volley strategy. He is not only an aggressive serve and volley player, but he also tries to approach the net during baseline rallies as often as possible.

Roger Federer → Attitude/Overall Play

To be honest, you would do well to try and emulate any aspect of Roger Federer’s game. He has a stunning forehand/backhand, deadly serve, magical footwork and nearly unrivaled touch at the net. Any young player however, would do well to watch how he carries himself on the court. He’s a consummate professional who is completely even-keeled on the court. Being able to keep your emotions in check is something most players, no matter the age or skill level, can work on. Just take some time to enjoy Federer’s Top 10 shots
