French Open Fashion: The Best (and Worst) Looks in Paris

Paris is one of the fashion capitals of the world, so it’s only natural that we critique the outfits at the French Open. With their Breton stripe shirts and floral print dresses, some of the players perfected the Parisian look, and would have made three-time French Open champion and designer René Lacoste proud. Others committed what the French call a fashion faux pas, a mistake at Roland Garros nearly as egregious as an unforced error on a crosscourt forehand. Take a peek at our picks for the best and worst of French Open fashion. Who was the most stylish in your book?

The Best

1. Caroline Wozniacki

This is so gorgeous. Stella McCartney has missed the mark before, but she nailed this look.

2. Maria Sharapova

Bravo, Nike on incorporating the classic French Breton stripes into this look. The navy and white is so simple, but so perfect. Every girl is going to be rushing to the store to buy this outfit in the coming weeks.

3. Roger Federer

Is it even possible for him not to look good?

4. Belinda Bencic

I love this. The cut is so flattering and the transparent strip on the side is très chic.

5. Grigor Dimitrov

Too bad he lost because he looks real good.

6. Ekaterina Makarova

The mesh trim on the skirt is so pretty, and although I typically hate cap sleeves, they work with the scoop neck top. Everybody does vivid colors in Paris, but this look is unique in that it’s a neutral with bright accents.

7. Donna Vekic

A lot of other players wore this outfit and looked good, but she rocked it.

8. Tomas Berdych

Wearing burnt orange at the French Open is like wearing red at the Academy Awards. It used to be taboo, but now it’s cool. I also really love gray paired with a bright color.

9. Fabio Fognini

The headband is everything.

10. Sloane Stephens

We’re used to seeing Sloane in bright colors, but this muted palette is pretty, too.

11. Angelique Kerber

I like the color combination and the pleating on the skirt. I’ll nitpick and say the shirt is too long, and unfortunately covers up most of the navy part of the skirt.

12. Julia Görges

This sunny yellow makes me happy.

13. Eugenie Bouchard

She looks great, but we saw her wear a similar color and style at Melbourne. I would have liked to see something new.

14. Venus Williams

I love that she wears her own designs, and this dress really embodies the spirit of Roland Garros. My only criticism is that I think few people besides Venus could pull off this look.

15. John Isner

Lacoste can do no wrong by John Isner, but I would have preferred the shorts be a lighter color. It’s spring in Paris, after all.

16. Ernests Gulbis

Orange again. I can dig it.

Could Go Either Way

17. Stan Wawrinka

The shirt is not so great, but I have a weird obsession with madras/plaid.

18. Zarina Diyas

I stared at this outfit for a long time because I couldn’t decide how to feel. I respect anyone who can pull off a bold pattern, but at the same time I’ve always loathed cap sleeves.

19. Rafael Nadal

He looks nice in blue, but in this case I hate that it’s a monochrome outfit.

20. Serena Williams

There’s nothing wrong with this outfit except that it’s so boring for her. We’ve seen the leopard print before and she’s worn pink at the last two majors. I was really looking forward to an experimental look from Serena.

The Worst

21. Novak Djokovic

This shade of orange is a bit different than the one Berdych and Gulbis are wearing, and I don’t think it works as well. Orange and black always remind me of Halloween.

22. David Goffin

Save the white for Wimbledon.

23. Alize Cornet

Not a fan of the color nor the amount of ruching and ruffles on this dress (or is it a shirt and skirt?).

24. Flavia Pennetta

This look is from Stella McCartney again, but it’s blah. Get it together, Stella.

25. Kevin Anderson

I feel like most people wouldn’t have a problem with this shirt, but the pattern on it reminds me of Greyscale, which makes my skin crawl.

26. Svetlana Kuznetsova

There’s a lot of things I could say about this outfit, but my mom taught me that if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.
