How to Prepare Your Child for Competitive Tennis: Step 3

STEP 3: Sign Up Your Child for USTA Play Days

The next step is to have your child play against children their age who are in the same position (“real opponents”), in turn having to experience, and adapt to another child’s competitive behavior. The easiest way to do so is to get in touch with your United States Tennis Association (USTA) section to see what events and programs they offer.

The USTA Play Days, that are offered in the different sections around the country, introduce children to exactly what you are looking for at this point. At this point in development the light feeling of competition without the pressure of winning or losing is key. All players are organized by skill level and play short matches against the other players in their own skill group. This ensures your child will experience a fun atmosphere which doesn’t place a damaging emphasis on winning since results are not documented.
