2005: Kim Clijsters Becomes First Unseeded Women to Win the Sony Open

In 2003, Kim Clijsters was ranked World No 1. Less than two years later, after suffering through various injuries and setbacks, she found herself at No. 133 in the world. In 2005 however, she was back with a vengeance, taking down both the BNP Paribas Open and the Sony Open.

She was the first unseeded female player to win the Miami title after beating Elena Dementieva, Amélie Mauresmo and Maria Sharapova along the way. More impressively she won the tournament without dropping a set. On the back of these great performances, she soon found herself back in the top 20 in the world.
