Davis Cup started today, and it was full of young talent! Here is the Davis Cup day 1 recap!
World Group
Great Britain vs Australia 1:1
Andy Murray and Thanasi Kokkinakis may be practice partners and good friends, but the world no. 3 was all business on the court today. He destroyed the young Australian 6-3 6-0 6-3 and took the early 1-0 lead for Great Britain. Bernard Tomic then took on world no. 300 Dan Evans. Evans had not played a top 100 player in over a year, but he did have one major advantage: he beat Tomic in the 2013 US Open. Ultimately, it wasn’t enough. Tomic tied the rubber 1-1 with a four set win.
Murray/Inglot play Groth/Hewitt in doubles tomorrow.
Belgium vs Argentina 1:1
As expected, David Goffin and Leonardo Mayer won their matches today. This match is as tough to call as we predicted.
Bemelmans/Coppejans play Berlocq/Schwartzman in doubles tomorrow.
World Group Play-offs
Switzerland vs Netherlands 2:0
Switzerland leads 2-0, but it wasn’t easy. Stan Wawrinka played the tournament of his life this past French Open, but hasn’t appeared to be on his A-game since then. This became even more apparent when the Swiss had to go a full five sets to beat world no. 144 Thiemo De Bakker. Roger Federer took the court next and proved why he is the best. He put his disappointing loss to Djokovic in the US Open finals behind him and easily defeated Galung in three sets.
Federer/Wawrinka play Middelkoop/Van Rijthoven tomorrow.
Czech Republic vs India 1:1
The Czech Republic finds themselves without their top player Tomas Berdych this weekend. Lukas Rosol took the team on his shoulders though, easily winning his match in three sets. India countered though when Somdev Devvarman served 20 aces and tied it all up with with his own three set victory.
Paes/Bopanna play Pavlasek/Stepanek in doubles tomorrow.
Italy vs Russia 1:1
Fabio Fognini and Teymuraz Gabashvili have both had big wins over top players this year. Gabashvili defeated Andy Murray in Washington and Fognini ousted Nadal in the US Open. The two of them kept it up today, both winning their matches in three sets. The two countries are in a tie going into tomorrow’s doubles.
Donskoy/Kravchuk play Lorenzi/Seppi in doubles tomorrow.
USA vs Uzbekistan 1:1
Steve Johnson and Denis Istomin went the distance in a thrilling five setter. It was finally Istomin who secured the last point and took the match. In order to avoid a 0-2 deficit, Jack Sock buckled down and defeated Farrukh Dustov in three sets.
Dream team Querrey/Johnson play Dustov/Istomin in doubles tomorrow.
Croatia vs Brazil 1:1
Thomaz Belucci defeated Mate Delic, but it wasn’t without a fight. The two had to go four sets before Belucci could claim the win. Rising star Borna Coric evened out the score after defeating Joao Souza ____.
Melo/Soares play Dodig/Skugor in doubles tomorrow.
Colombia vs Japan
It took all five sets, but Santiago Giraldo finally managed to take the match against Taro Daniel. Kei Nishikori must defeat Alejandro Falla to even it out.
Cabal/Farah play Nishioka/Uchiyama in doubles tomorrow.
Germany vs Dominican Republic 1:1
Dustin Brown made it the farthest he ever has in a major this year when he defeated Rafael Nadal to get to the third round of Wimbledon. Unfortunately, he has not been able to back it up. Today really was not any different. Victor Estrella Burgos defeated the German in four sets. Philipp Kohlschreiber took no time at all to defeat Jose Hernandez-Fernandez to end the day tied.
Cid/Olivares play Brown/Petzchner in doubles tomorrow.
Poland vs Slovakia 1:1
Martin Klizan defeated Michal Przysiezny to get the early lead over Poland, but Jerzy Janowicz leveled the score with a four set win over Norbert Gombos.
Kubot/Matkowski play Martin/Zelenay in doubles tomorrow.
