For a brief second, when she was down 3-0 in the third set, we thought Serena Williams was going to lose in the third round of Wimbledon to Britain’s 23-year-old phenom, Heather Watson.
But then we remembered she’s Serena Williams, and this is how she does things, and she’s certainly not going to let the hometown hero wreck her grand slam winning streak. Three games later, the score was tied with Williams serving.
Watson broke her. Then Williams broke back. Then Watson broke her again. Williams broke back.
At 5-all Williams finally held serve. All she needed was one more break.
Three match points later, Williams claimed victory. A deflated Watson questioned the umpire’s line call — a final attempt to get back in the game. But it was over, and Serena had proved her supremacy once again.
Coming back in the third set is typical fashion for Williams. But after a 6-2 victory in the first, we expected her to win the match with ease. Yet Watson, fueled by the crowd’s energy, fought back to capture the second set 6-4.
In the third set, the young Briton looked fresh, while Williams seemed tense. It was evident the American was not pleased by the stadium’s loud cheers in favor of Watson, and at one point, stopped to complain to the umpire.
But as we’ve learned over the past year, no outside forces can stop the strength of Serena. And we know that more third-set comebacks will follow for the queen of American tennis as Wimbledon continues.
Happy July Fourth weekend, everyone. Go America. Go Serena.
