Established in 1973, the Family Circle Cup was fundamental in the development of women’s tennis as it was the first event of its kind to offer $100,000 in prize money. Since its inception, the tournament has been sponsored by Family Circle magazine, the first women’s magazine to back a professional women’s sporting event. The magazine also holds the record for the longest-running tournament sponsor in professional tennis.

Girl Power

What could be better than a day with your best girlfriends watching some of the world’s greatest tennis players? If that day also included shopping, spirits and salon time, of course! On Tuesday, April 7, women can enjoy a special day with their friends for the price of a regular ticket. Ladies Day Out includes stadium seating, a Bloody Mary bar, a wine and cheese tasting, and access to the Vanity Salon Style Bus and vendor shopping.

For $60, guests can also attend a luncheon featuring an entertaining expert who will teach you how to “improve your serve” at home. (familycirclecup.com)

Philanthropy and Service

Two nights at the Family Circle Cup honor the tournament’s commitment to families. On Wednesday, it’s Pink Out Night for the Cure, where fans are encouraged to wear their brightest pink attire to support the Susan G. Komen foundation. For each fan dressed in pink, the tournament will donate to cancer research and health and advocacy programs. Ladies as well as gents should dress up for this cause. Besides, wouldn’t the stadium look so pretty in pink? Then on Thursday, it’s Military Appreciation Night, where all active and retired military personnel and their families will receive free admission! Sounds like a great way to kick off the weekend.

For every spectator wearing pink at the Family Circle Cup on Thursday, $1 will be donated toward the fight against breast cancer.

Nothing but Net

Want the chance to win a car? At the Family Circle Cup, tossing a tennis ball could win you a brand-new Nissan. This Friday night, SunTrust bank will sponsor a contest in which fans throw tennis balls from the stands in the hopes of making it into one of the boxes on the court below. It may seem silly, but look how much fun these folks are having:

Whether you’re most excited about the action-packed tennis, Bloody Marys or chance to win a free car, we hope you’ll check out the Family Circle Cup this week. Charleston is calling your name!
