Fed Axed: Australian Open Night Five Recap

Not So Jolly Roger

Holy moly, did that just happen? Last night Roger Federer lost to world no. 46 Andreas Seppi, breaking the hearts of die-hard Fed fans everywhere. The last time he lost in the third round of the Australian Open he was just 19 years old. What happened? “At this point who cares?” Federer said in a press conference after the match. “I’m on the plane; he’s not.”

Meanwhile, Seppi must be on cloud nine. After his 6-4, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 victory over the no. 2 seed, he said to the cameras: “I just tried to enjoy playing on center court and tried to do my best.” The Italian will face Nick Kyrgios next, and if he can beat Federer, we’re pretty confident he can take on the 19-year-old Wimbledon quarterfinalist, too.

Here’s footage of the point that closed out the match for Seppi.

Errani Errs

Wickmayer may not have been a blip on anyone’s radar going into this tournament, but let’s not forget the current world no. 80 was once a U.S. Open semi-finalist. She’s powered through this event, defeating all her opponents in three sets, which included a victory over no. 23 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. We think she has a good chance at upsetting no. 3 seed Simona Halep in the next round.

Here’s match point for the ecstatic Wickmayer:
