Fun Facts About the US Open Women’s Semifinalists

In anticipation for the US Open women’s semifinals tonight, we thought it would be a good idea for us all to get to know these four amazing tennis players just a little bit better. So here it is, some fun facts about our US Open women’s semifinalists.

Serena Williams

Serena Williams is only two matches away from making history. As she battles for her 22nd major title and a Grand Slam, we take a step back and look at some fun trivial facts about this Queen of Tennis.

  • She owns a small stake in the Miami Dolphins franchise. Who knew?
  • She keeps OPI nail polish in her gym bag just in case. It’s good to know that she’s got the essentials covered.
  • She can do this (plus her entire Instagram is amazing):

 Roberta Vinci

Roberta Vinci is no. 43 in singles and is making her deepest run in a singles major draw at this US Open. All at 32 years old no less. Here’s what you need to know about her.

  • She has won a Career Grand Slam in doubles with former doubles partner Sara Errani. The two best friends shockingly split as doubles partners earlier this year to focus on their singles careers and other endeavors.
  • The Italian tour women are incredibly close. Just look how much fun they always seem to be having:

 Flavia Pennetta

Flavia Pennetta has won 10 WTA singles titles. Like her fellow countrywomen Vinci, she is 33 years old and making her first semifinal appearance at a major. Here are a few pieces of trivia about Pennetta.

  • She is dating Fabio Fognini, and they pretty are adorable. If you don’t remember, Fabio also had a pretty stellar US Open when he beat Nadal in the third round.

  • She played doubles with Errani this US Open. The two just lost to Hingis/Mirza in the semifinals last night.

Simona Halep

At just 23 years old, Simona Halep is the youngest of the semifinalists. While she has struggled at the majors this year, she is making up for it at this year’s US Open. Here’s what you should know about this Romanian tennis player.

  • About 6 years ago, she had a breast reduction and went from a 34DD to a 34C. Since the operation, she has been able to maximize speed and reaction time,  which are her strongest assets as a player. She has been fairly open and candid about the whole thing, though the change would obviously not have gone unnoticed. She admitted, “My ability to react quickly was worse and my breasts made me uncomfortable,” Halep told reporters at the time of her operation. “It’s the weight that troubles me. My ability to react quickly, my breasts make me uncomfortable when I play.”

  • Gerard Butler is her dream celebrity doubles player. Take note of this, Gerard.
  • She weirdly hates pizza. Not normal, Simona.
