Wimbledon may be over but there is still a lot of professional tennis to be played. Get ready folks because the 40th Mylan World TeamTennis season has started! The fast-paced and coed atmosphere that is Mylan World TeamTennis is something that you won’t want to miss. Every team is strong, and every match will be up for grabs. Who will hold up the King Trophy this year? Let’s take a look at each of the 7 teams and where they stand at this early stage of the season.
Washington Kastles
The Washington Kastles are looking to hold the King Trophy for the fifth consecutive year. They are all business when it comes to their roster, securing 2015 Wimbledon champions Serena Williams, Martina Hingis, and Leander Paes for one or more of their matches. Venus Williams and Sam Querrey will also be taking the court for this dominant team. The Kastles came out on top this past Sunday against the Boston Lobsters and are set to face The Austin Aces this evening. Don’t miss this dominating team in action!
Austin Aces
Coming into their second season this year, the Austin Aces have completely transformed their roster. Rather than trying to control a rotating star-studded cast again, the Aces have opted for a fixed set of solid singles and doubles players for the entire season. Their one marquee player Andy Roddick has even pulled out of their first home match, his only Aces appearance, due to an injury. The Austin Aces took down the Boston Lobsters just yesterday and will be going up against the Mylan WTT defending champions tonight. Help me cheer on my hometown team as they fight for the King Trophy!
Boston Lobsters
The Boston Lobsters have struggled in the league over the past few years. In an effort to change this, they have gone through a complete makeover from coach to players. They have even secured Eugenie Bouchard for their home match against the Philadelphia Freedoms. The Boston Lobsters haven’t started off on the best foot though, already losing to both the Kastles and the Aces. They are up against the Springfield Lasers tonight, and they need all of the support they can get!
California Dream
California Dream is celebrating its inaugural season in Mylan World TeamTennis. What better way to assert their presence in the league than to secure the Bryan brothers for a few of their key matches. The Dream are 1-1 going into their home match this evening against the Philadelphia Freedoms. Help make their inaugural season unforgettable!
Philadelphia Freedoms
The Philadelphia Freedoms are one of the oldest teams in the league. They have a strong roster this year with Taylor Townsend and Robby Ginepri. Also, Wimbledon quarterfinalist Coco Vandeweghe is an important substitute for the team. The Philadelphia defeated the Springfield Lasers, but lost to the San Diego Aviators in a Supertiebreaker. They will take on the California Dream tonight. Cheer on Billie Jean King’s favorite team!
San Diego Aviators
The San Diego Aviators have a new team this year, but it appears to be just as strong. The team has secured the world #1 junior player Taylor Fritz. Madison Keys, America’s rising star, will be making a few appearances later in the season, and James Blake will be a crucial substitute for the team. After just winning a nail-biter against the Philadelphia Freedoms last night, the Aviators are set to face the Boston Lobsters tomorrow evening. Cheer on all of these American favorites!
Springfield Lasers
The Springfield Lasers are going into the 20th season of Mylan WTT. The Lasers have had a slow start, losing to both the Freedoms and the Dream already. Hopefully, the big-server John Isner will lead the team to some victories later in the season. The Lasers play the Lobsters this evening. Which team will end their losing streak? Support this Mylan WTT staple!
