The Davis Cup Semifinals are taking place this weekend, September 18-20. The top four teams are Great Britain, Australia, Belgium, and Argentina. While Belgium versus Argentina will be a good match and a tough one to call, it’s Great Britain versus Australia that everyone will have their eyes. Who will advance to the two spots in the finals?
Great Britain VS Australia
Emirates Arena, Glasgow, Great Britain
The Murray brothers, Kyle Edmund and Dominic Inglot make up the Great Britain team and will face Australian team Bernard Tomic, Sam Groth, Thanasi Kokkinakis and Lleyton Hewitt.
While Andy Murray will definitely take the #1 singles spot, it is still up in the air as to who will join him and fill the #2 singles spot. Jamie Murray looks in good form, especially after making it to the US Open doubles final. His partner will most likely by Dominic Inglot, a US Open doubles semifinalist.
The Australian team boasts a strong team. Veteran Lleyton Hewitt is making his final Davis Cup season. A doubles specialist, he also came in clutch in singles during their 3-2 victory over Kasakhstan during the quarterfinals. The Australia team has made yet another switch in their lineup, replacing Nick Kyrgios, who needs to focus on maturing, with Bernard Tomic. I guess Tennis Australia believes Tomic has grown up enough for now.
Prediction: Great Britain, but I believe it will be a close match.
Belgium VS Argentina
Forest National, Brussels, Belgium
David Goffin leads the Belgium team against Leonardo Mayer and the Argentina team. Belgium has taken advantage of star-lacking Switzerland and Canada teams to get to the semifinals. These two teams are fairly even, and it will definitely be a battle for a spot in the finals.
Prediction: Argentina, because I believe doubles will be the decider.
