How to Work Fall Trends Into Your Tennis Outfits

Fall fashion brings to mind floor-length coats, tall boots and thick scarves — definitely not ideal tennis apparel. Many of this year’s trends, however, can also be incorporated on the tennis court and are much more affordable than the looks in the center spread of Vogue magazine. From houndstooth to color blocking, here’s how to work fall trends into your tennis outfits.

Plaid

A signature fall pattern, plaid found its way onto the outfits of Feliciano Lopez and Nicole Gibbs at the 2015 U.S. Open. While Lopez’ Ellesse top isn’t available in the United States, men can get their plaid fix with Stan Wawrinka’s 2015 French Open shorts, available for $42 on TennisWarehouse.com. Women can find Gibbs’ houndstooth tank for $60. The New Balance top comes in black and white as well as turquoise.

Patchwork

Colorblocking has long been a staple in Stella McCartney’s tennis dresses, seen here on Caroline Wozniacki at the U.S. Open. This fall, color blocking takes the form of patchwork in a hodgepodge of colors, patterns and cuts. Steal Wozniacki’s on-trend dress for $96, or get champion Flavia Pennetta’s similar tank top for just $48. Men can get the look with Lacoste’s new color block polo, $96 on TennisWarehouse.com.

Bohemian

Watercolor, kaleidoscopic patterns in the form of flowing dresses and wide-leg pants are back in style for fall. Venus Williams nailed the look at the U.S. Open with her newest piece from EleVen, available for $88. You can also go boho with this pink sling tank from Jerdog ($44) or floral racerback from Lucky in Love ($64).

’80s

Three decades ago it was all about bright colors, abstract patterns and shiny fabrics. Tomas Berdych knows the ’80s are alive again with his latest look from H&M, which he showed off at Billie Jean King National Tennis Center last week. Men can get Berdych’s V-neck shirt for $30 online, while women can find similar styles in Prince’s racer tank ($40) or Jamie Sadock’s zip jacket ($115).
