With the quarterfinals of Davis Cup coming up this weekend, we’re taking a look back on some of the greatest upsets and surprises from past Davis Cups.
Ivan Ljubicic lead his Croatian team to win one of the most memorable Davis Cup titles in 2005. In the first round they faced a heavily favored United States team. To start things off, Ljubicic downed Andre Agassi in 1st singles in straight sets. In an even bigger upset, Ljubicic and his partner, Mario Ancic, defeated the Bryan Brothers, the No. 1 doubles team in the world, in 1st doubles. Apparently those two wins weren’t enough considering he went on to beat Andy Roddick, America’s No. 1 player and former World No. 1, in a tough five setter.
The Croatian Davis Cup team moved on to the Davis Cup finals against the Russians. Ljubicic lead the team to victory, finishing the 2005 Davis Cup year by winning 11 out of his 12 matches. This run enabled Ljubicic to climb all the way up to the No. 9 ranked player in the world.
