About Shane
Hi, my name is Shane. I started playing tennis when I was 8 or 9 years old. I played in high school and for the University of Northern Colorado. After school I moved to Bradenton, FL, to teach higher level juniors. I have worked for a couple local tennis shops and academies, and currently I freelance. I was USPTA p2 certified for five years.

Teaching Experience: 9 years

Teaching Style
I have taught lessons for people from age 2 to 84, and I’ve found that each age group has different needs and different trajectories in tennis. With juniors and kids the goal is to build fundamentals and footwork discipline as well as a love of tennis and an understanding of strategy. With younger kids it’s important to have fun and keep them interested in tennis while you try to develop proper technique which can be a bit of a balancing act. Older juniors are often lacking serve variety or sometimes have trouble controlling emotions in a match situation and you have to work on these things usually around a tournament schedule. Playing tournaments can make it difficult to make technical changes as sometimes the change is detrimental in the short term. Adults and seniors typically tell me what aspect of their game they want to improve, usually volleys or ground strokes sometimes serve, physical fitness and footwork is almost never a focal point. Lessons are typically structured with a warm up and stretch first, then either ground strokes or serve technique, then some live ball implementation of technique, then drills to reinforce the technique, typically I will spend a little time most lessons working on volleys, half volleys, approach shots and other various touch shots, as I want students to have an all-court game. There is a short cool down period at the end followed by stretching and strategy talk. This is typically different for adults and seniors.

Hobbies
Surfing, football, fly fishing
