About Al
I’m a former DJ (radio announcer) and professional musician. I am an honorably discharged vet who was sent to Germany, where I learned to play on those wonderful red clay courts. I was introduced to the game in 1975 and began teaching in 1991. I worked my way up to a solid 4.5 level winning numerous tournaments from Nashville, TN, to Birmingham, AL. While playing I continued to study, train and attend workshops to complete certification with PTR and USPTA (not a current member). I served as the Director of Tennis for the City of Madison, AL, from 1993 until 2006. While there, I offered private/semi-private, group lessons, adult and junior clinics/camps, celebrated USTA “National Tennis Month” in conjunction with USPTA “Tennis Across America,” conducting free tennis events, and offered adult and junior sanctioned and non-sanctioned tennis tournaments. I have also served as a PTR/USTA National Clinician working to train coaches. I served as a Southern Section Minority Coordinat
or for the USPTA.
In 1992, I co-founded and continue to serve as the executive director of Youth Development Association, Inc. YDA is a non-profit organization serving youth in underserved schools and communities. YDA is an organizational member, a USTA/NJTL Chapter and Community Tennis Association (CTA) with the USTA.
I am also an ordained minister with an emphasis on youth ministry.
