About Andrew
“It is no accident that tennis uses the language of life . . . the lessons of tennis are the lessons of maturity” – Andre Agassi, 2011. Tennis has had a profound impact on my life. I have told people many times that I would not have achieved success in my life without its influence. I began playing competitive tennis when I was 14 and on my high school tennis team in Connecticut. My senior season, as a captain, our team was undefeated. I played at the Division III level in college, at Roger Williams University. I have had some success as a player, but I believe that I am a much better teacher. I think, simply put, tennis helps people learn to become more independent and mentally strong. Unlike other individual sports (and of course team sports), in tennis you are always competing against yourself and your opponent, physically and mentally. It is impossible not to become introspective when playing this sport. Some people find that frightening and seek other sports, while other
s embrace it with zeal. I have come to believe that tennis makes for better people and have tried to share my vision with others. I have taught the sport to people of all ages. I began teaching when I was 16 and coaching teams when I was 22. I have taught beginner students in town recreation programs and high level international students as the tennis director at Camp Bournedale. I have coached a high school tennis team that has won multiple league titles and progressed in the MIAA team tournament. I have coached individuals who have advanced in the MIAA individual tournament. I have also taught at private clubs, like Village Racquet and Fitness in Plymouth, MA.
Teaching Experience: 14 years
Teaching Style
I emphasize competition and fitness. I make quick and accurate assessments of strengths and weaknesses. As tennis is a life-long sport, learning proper technique is key. Tennis is an enjoyable game to play, but I think it is best when people are able to reach their potential, otherwise it can be frustrating. Improvement is always my goal.
Hobbies
I have coached high school track as well as tennis. I enjoy fitness and have run a marathon. I taught high school English for nine years. I am currently an MFA candidate in creative writing at Emerson College in Boston, MA.
