About Jessica
Hi! It is exciting to get my name out there to kids and adults who want to be introduced to the game of tennis. I have been playing since I was 5, played on junior leagues through middle school and then joined my high school tennis team. My academic aspirations kept me from looking into playing at the college level, but I have been playing on both ALTA and USTA teams since then. I have played on ALTA teams at levels up to AA1 and on USTA teams ranging from 4.0 to 4.5. I have always loved playing singles, as this is the position where my strength lies. However, when I was introduced to mixed doubles as a younger adult, I began to really take to doubles and have grown much stronger in that area. I have been teaching high school math for eight years now. My love for the game brought me into the coaching realm, and I have been coaching both JV and varsity tennis since then. I particularly love being a high school coach because I get to work with kids who remind me of myself as a
high school tennis player. I can relate to their concerns as a player and I am familiar with the kind of competition they will see as they progress in their game. There is nothing more refreshing than seeing someone grow as a player, whether it be a beginner or a seasoned athlete.

Teaching Experience: 8 years

Teaching Style
Serving and baseline strategy are my strengths. I believe that a good, solid serve is one of the characteristics a good player must have. When teaching a student how to serve or working on an existing form, I promote the idea that there is no such thing as a second serve. We work on first serves only to develop a solid, fluid form that hopefully leads to a flawless serve, whether it be the first or the second. This allows students to build confidence while taking the pressure of them having to get the second serve in. Baseline play is my absolute favorite. I grew up loving singles and still prefer playing this position to this day. My baseline focus revolves around the concept of teaching my students how to know where the opponent is going to hit the ball before they hit it. In a sense, I help students learn how to move and respond to opponent racquet and body placement. I constantly enforce the idea of patience as one of the most useful strategies in a singles match. It is
usually not the hardest player who wins the match, it’s the player who can outlast and out-strategize their opponent. I, myself, am not the hardest hitter compared to players of my level, but I am supremely patient and very good at making my opponent make the mistakes. Lessons usually consist of some minor stretching following by a few minutes of hitting (depending on level). During each warm-up, I will assess what areas the student might need to focus on and use that information to guide the rest of the lesson. Some lessons will involve more hitting while others might focus more on form and strategy. I usually end the hour with a recap of the lesson as well as some “homework” for the student to work on before the next lesson.

Hobbies
I have two daughters of my own. Nothing makes me happier than seeing them smile. Much of my hobbies and activities revolve around seeing just how much I can make that happen. I love to read, although I don’t have time to do as much of it as I would like to. While I don’t consider myself a gifted artist, I just recently have fallen in love with painting. It has become a great way for me to express my creative side while releasing stress in a healthy way.
