About Jonathan
Hi! My name is Jonathan, and I am currently a sophomore at University of Washington Seattle. My intended major is biochemistry, hoping to do pre-med and become a doctor someday. Now a little bit about myself as a tennis player … tennis has always been my passion. It has been around nine or 10 years since I first starting playing this sport and I have to admit, it used to be a love/hate relationship as I’ve been in the competitive scene until the last year of my high school. But now, it’s just been total love/appreciation for the sport as it is my only get-away when college gets stressful. However, as soon as I improve my one-handed backhand, I’m planning on competing in tournaments again!
Short summary of my profile so far as a tennis player:
Started learning tennis at Sprinker Recreational Center at 10 years old through a scholarship. Began competing in USTA tournaments in less than a year, starting out at Rookie and climbing to the Champs level. Up until high school, I competed in many local USTA Champs tournaments in Bally’s around Seattle-Tacoma area and couple prestigious ones such as the Dual-Level 5 National Tournament held in Tacoma Lawn Tennis Club and national tournaments in Yakima and Beaverton, Oregon. In terms of USTA rankings, my best achievement was ranking in the top-10 in the Pacific-Northwest Section in the age group of 14 and under. The reason of quitting competitive play in USTA tournaments was due to the closing down of Bally’s Fitness Clubs (access to local tournaments) and lack of financial support from parents (as they could not afford to send both me and my brother to tournaments farther away and keep up with lessons). With that, I focused on high school tennis, competing in 2A state tournaments a
ll four years. Best achievements were placing third in doubles in freshman year and first in doubles in senior year. Going into University of Washington Seattle, I actively participated in the tennis club during the fall quarter. As I got more busy with studies and other club activities, I had very little time to play tennis throughout the year. Right now, I am playing for fun and training at the same time to hopefully compete in future USTA adult tournaments in the 4.5-5.0 league.
Teaching Experience: 2 years
Teaching Style
I would try to use the teaching methods from my past coaches and tennis clubs/lessons that worked for me and I think would work for the players. I could also simply look up various coaching tips and structure on the internet that are relevant. One coaching aspect which really helped me in the past by an amazing coach is video recording the player’s form and showing them how their form looks like. You can analyze their form, compare it to the pro’s, as I think that it important for the player to know how they hit.
Most importantly, I think that it is very important to listen to the player’s feedback and use that to tweak the structure of future lessons. Everyone is different in terms of how they learn and what works and what doesn’t. But one thing that is the same for everyone is that they all share a goal to improve their game.
