About Justin
My family has been around tennis for more than 55 years, starting with my mom and dad playing for Oakland University in Michigan, and my older brother and I picked up rackets right away, and instantly got attached to the game. I believe I was three years old when I first started doing tennis lessons in Owatonna, Minnesota. At age four I moved to Eden Prairie, MN where I started playing tennis at Northwest Athletic Club – Crosstown (now Lifetime Fitness – Crosstown). I kept playing tennis throughout my youth years and started playing tournaments at eight years oId, and started qualifying for national tournaments at age 11 for boy’s 12 & under, and that basically started my junior career for nationals throughout 14’s, 16’s and 18’s. Throughout my junior playing I trained at Flagship Tennis Academy by head coach Ryan Dussalt and the Gopher Tennis Academy by Viet Pham, both in Minnesota.
For high school tennis I started varsity for five years and played for the Eagles at Eden Prairie High School. Throughout the five years I played No. 1 and 2 singles. My freshman year my partner and I place third in doubles and my senior year I placed second in singles of the state tournament.
For college tennis I played for Eastern Illinois my freshman year playing 4, 5, and 6 singles and 1 doubles, behind our number 1 singles player I had the best record on the team. I then got injured and left Eastern Illinois and took a 2 years off of playing but continued to coach. I then decided to go play 1 more year for at Mesa Community College in Arizona since I had some eligibility left. I played number 1, 3, 4, 5 singles and 1 doubles. Being undefeated in the ACCAC we qualified for nationals, I won 1 round of singles, and 1 round of doubles, we finished 10th in the nation.
After playing for MCC, I had other opportunities to play at some NAIA school’s since my eligibility was over for NCAA schools, but I decided to stay in the Phoenix area and go to ASU and focus more on coaching and facility management.
Teaching Experience: 9 years
Teaching Style
My teaching style varies from player to player and the goals they want to set for themselves. I emphasize having consistency with weapons and my favorites to teach are a killer forehand and a big serve.
