About David
I grew up in Houston, TX, and started playing tennis at 7, and got serious when Boris won Wimbledon in 1985 and I decided I wanted to beat him. That didn’t happen, but I put in a lot of time on the court and got pretty good. I started teaching tennis at 16 for the Rice University Junior Camp in the summers. I then went to the Air Force Academy and played for a bit over half the time until I burned out. I coached at that summer camp upon graduation and went on to play and coach off and on through today.
I grew up with a 1-handed backhand, serving and volleying, as I prepped to beat Becker. Unfortunately, I only grew to about 5’9″ and my serve never became a real weapon. Now, I love the groundie game. I like teaching people from beginner to advance, basing everything on correct fundamentals like grips and footwork.
Teaching Experience: 20 years
Teaching Style
I insist students do things right and don’t hit ceilings because of their mechanics. Therefore, if you take lessons with me, you’ll have a correct grip, you’ll get to the ball in the most efficient manner, you’ll hit shots on balance using your entire body, and people will recognize your strokes as the ones they see on TV.
The structure of my lessons will be tailored to you. That said, there will be a warm-up, and some hard work. Stretching afterwards will be up to you.
