About Michael
My name is Michael. I started playing tennis at the tender age of 4 in the city of Quantico VA, coached by my father, a retired Mastery Gunnery Sergeant in the United Stated Marine Corps. At the time, he was private instructor with a long history with the game, and had achieved his professional certification through Dennis Van Der Meer Academy in South Carolina in 1972. I was an active junior player on the USTA circuit, reaching a personal career high of #12 in the MATA (Mid Atlantic Tennis Associaton) when I was 15. I was the uncontested champion for three years in a row at the First Virgina Bank Tennis Invatational from 1985-1987 held annually in Fredericksburg Virginia. In high school, I was fortunate enough to make the varsity team my freshman year, where I played #2 seed. I was blessed to be the #1 seed the following three years. I also founded and ran a free tennis clinic during the summer for specially challenged players, which was in conjunction with the Fredericksburg YM
CA. I continued to play through college at Old Dominion University. (Division III), where I received a B.S. in Speech Pathology. After graduation, I worked as a skiing/tennis instructor at Massanutten Resort in the Shenandoah Valley. In 2000, I moved to Orlando Florida, and in 2002, my professional tennis instructing began when I became certified through the Professional Tennis Registry. With over 40 years playing experience, and 11 years coaching on a professional basis, I truly love and live tennis. By combining a high energy, fun approach to my classes, I truly strive to make every lesson a special one! Whether it be the basic fundamentals, conditioning/footwork/mobility, tactics/mental game, stroke development, establishing shot muscle memory, or the sharpening of an already accomplished players “weapons” I feel confidant I can take your game to the next level. I have also had a tremendous amount of success with getting beginning younger(or older) players to catch the “tennis
bug” AKA developing a good, healthy hunger for playing, learning ,loving and sharing the game of tennis. I utilize a $5,000,000 liability insurance policy that covers all students regardless of teaching location. Ages 10 and under are trained under the new “Quickstart Tennis” program guidelines which includes smaller rackets, oversize/slower balls, and reduced court size. My training has the privilege to offer the latest cutting edge technology available to all its students! This includes including usage of ball machines, 1080p HD video taping and analysis periodically, the newest training aids on the market, racket demos, etc. Whether it be a private lesson, semi-private, or group setting, I always try to bring a energetic, simple and fun approach to my instruction. Both professional and personal references are available upon request, and I will be honored to speak to anyone about potentially training with me , and look forward to the chance of serving your tennis needs.

Teaching Experience: 20 years

Teaching Style
I specialize in Junior/ Senior Performance and Development. I have also had tremendously great success in getting new players “hooked on the game” so to speak, or even getting players who gave it up for whatever the reason to get jump right back into the mix! We are all here to get better at a sport we either love, just started to love, or have loved for a long time (Or maybe just trying for the first time!). My emphasis would be on establishing a strong foundation of the basics of tennis, hopefully while having some fun along the way….my own personal style is to get the folks to laugh during the regular parts of the lesson…..its hard not to have fun if you are laughing! Lesson structure for a typical adult would be as follows…Warm up to include: One minute or less overview of the lesson/AND ask “is there any thing specific you would like to work on today?”, Light stretching, Light Cardio, and Ball Tracking. Move on next to: Footwork/Mobility/Speed/Plyometrics, On court warm-up
from service line, Targeting of area of concern or specific shot, i.e. volley, backhand groundstroke, serve, Teaching Advanced Shots/Tactics (Client specific) i.e. half volley, volley dropshot/lob, Heavy Spin, the MENTAL Game, Cool Down/Quick, Recap/Assessment
