Nicolas Escudé Defeats World No. 1 to Bring France the Davis Cup Title

In 2001, the French Davis Cup team advanced to the final where they faced Australia on the grass courts in Melbourne. It was a very close match up seeing the French win the title 3-2 in the end.

Nicolas Escudé, who wasn’t even supposed to get a chance to play in the final, scored the biggest upset as he defeated World No. 1, Lleyton Hewitt. This five setter was the match that ultimately won the title for the French. If that wasn’t enough, on the road to the final he also beat the man who would go on to dominate the decade, the one and only Roger Federer in four sets.
