O Canada! What’s Going on at the Roger’s Cup?

This week, pretty much all the top tennis pros are in Canada for the Roger’s Cup, a major preparation event leading up to the U.S. Open. (A preparation event is another way of saying lesser than. Sorry Canada, you’ll never be as good as us.)

The women are in Toronto and the men, Montreal — which is weird to me — Do they not have enough courts or something? Anyhoo, here’s the recap of who’s winning, who’s losing and who posted a selfie on social media.

Oh yeah, she won.
Oh yeah, she won.

The Gals

Brit Heather Watson eased through her first round match against American Irina Falconi (6-1, 6-2) and will play 16th seed Andrea Petkovic next. The winner faces Serena Williams. Could be a chance for Watson to avenge her Wimbledon loss. But she won’t.

Alison Riske of the good ole U S of A defeated Timea Bacsinszky 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(3). Bacsinszky has been slaying lately, making it to the semifinals of the French Open and quarterfinals of Wimby. Yeahhhh, Alison. You go girl.

Canada’s it girl Eugenie Bouchard lost in the first round to 18-year-old Belinda Bencic 0-6, 7-5, 6-2. Damnnnn, that first set was brutal. Post-match, Bouchard told reporters “It’s for sure a step in the right direction,” referring to her second-set comeback. Ummm, ya still lost. So I would say that’s a step backward, if anything.

Cute nail polish, tho!

The Guys

Meanwhile, at La Coupe Rogers (ah, you’re so chic and French, Montreal) Novak Djokovic moved through to the third round with a 6-3, 7-6(4) win over some rando. I’m just kidding, he beat Thomaz Belluci, who’s actually pretty good.

Be tee dubs, Roger Federer isn’t playing in the Roger’s Cup, and it’s like, why? It’s literally your cup.

Jack Sock and Grigor Dimitrov won their first round matches and will play each other next, which is exciting because Sock beat Dimitrov at the French Open earlier this year. Sock it to him, Sock. (I fully realize that was the lamest pun ever.)

But perhaps the most riveting match of all will be between Canadian Vasek Pospisil and American John Isner. (LOL no, it will just be Isner hitting a bunch of really hard serves). Anyways, I’m not gonna lie I kind of want Vas to win because it’s his home country and everything and more power to ya.

And here's Dimitrov performing an interpretive dance.

Werk it.

#PlayGenie cause you’ll probably win.

This is unrelated to the Roger’s Cup but a few weeks ago Vasek Pospisil posted a picstich of him and his “bros” sitting on a bunch of couches while wearing sunglasses. It’s so weird and random that I had to share. Tennis pros, they’re just like us. But weirder.
