Serena Williams has had one of the biggest years in professional tennis, and professional sports for that matter. She had history right at her fingertips only for it all to come crashing down in what some call the biggest upset in women’s tennis history.
After her US Open semifinal loss to Roberta Vinci, Serena attempted to move on by turning her attention to other projects. She watched her Miami Dolphins beat the Washington Redskins, had her own New York Fashion Week Runway Show, and posed for the new and improved 2016 Pirelli Calendar.
But it was not enough to heal the physical and emotional roller coaster that was Serena’s 2015 tennis season.
“It’s no secret I’ve played injured most of the year — whether it was my elbow, my knee, or, in the final moments after a certain match in Flushing, my heart,” Serena says.
While she is still planning on playing exhibition matches, Serena withdraws from the China Open and the WTA Finals. Having already clinched the no. 1 spot for the rest of the 2015 season, she believes that the time off from competition will be the best thing for her body and her mind. She is looking to come back in 2016 healthy and focused.
