Sharapova’s leg injury has kept her out of a tournament since Wimbledon. She stayed optimistic throughout the summer, saying that she was doing all she could to be healthy and ready for the US Open. She withdrew from Toronto and Cincinnati in hopes that the time off would get her ready for New York. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough, and she had to make the tough decision to pull out of this year’s US Open.
With Sharapova out of the mix and Russian Kasatkina taking her place, her fourth of the draw opens up. Makarova, Kuznetsova, and and our own Austin Aces Svitolina can benefit from this last minute withdrawal.
