All tennis aside, Charleston, South Carolina, is a sneaky cool vacation spot that has a historical southern charm to it. Charleston, which was named “America’s Most Friendly City” by Travel + Leisure in 2013, boasts a one-of-a-kind culture influenced by a blend of people of Southern U.S., English, French and West African heritage.
One unique place, located in Charleston, is Daniel Island. It is an 4,000 acres island surrounded by two rivers offering miles of beaches to relax on. Conveniently for sports fans either living in or visiting Charleston, it is also home to two professional sports facilities, a soccer stadium and a tennis center.
The tennis facility I am referring to is the Family Circle Tennis Center. It holds the distinction of hosting America’s oldest WTA tournament on the women’s tour. If you visit the facility make sure you bring your racquet to play on the courts where Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki, Jelena Jankovic and current World No. 1, Serena Williams, have all won the Family Circle title.
You can choose from 20 championship tennis courts to play on, either one of 14 clay courts or 6 hard courts. You also might get a glimpse of the Family Circle Stadium that holds about 10,200 people. This facility is different to many of the recent tennis courts on the MTL Bucket List, in that it is a reasonably charged public tennis court. The Family Circle Tennis Center charges 15 dollars per hour for a clay court (Har-tru) and 10 dollars per hour for a Hard and Deco-Turf court, representing not only a once in a lifetime experience, but an affordable one as well.
