Wimbledon only allows white apparel, but this doesn’t mean that the outfits aren’t amazing and even crazy at times! While we wait to see what outfits Serena, Venus, Sharapova, Wozniaki, and others show up in this year, we will look back in time to see some of the most daring Wimbledon fashion statements that have graced this major!
Lili Alvarez 1926
Just take a look at Spanish tennis player Lili Alvarez’s incredible and, at the time, eye-brow raising fur-collared overcoat and vest dress at the 1926 Wimbledon. She reached the finals for the first time this tournament.
Gertrude Moran 1949
Gertrude Moran pushed the limits by occasionally flashing her lace undergarments under her regulation white skirt during the 1949 Wimbledon. She acquired the nickname “Gorgeous Gussie” at this tournament.
Martina Navratilova 1978
Women in the 70s flaunted more skin with short skirts and dresses that showed off much more of their legs. Martina Navratilova donned a short sailor inspired dress when she defeated Chris Evert for her first Wimbledon title in 1978.
Anne White 1985
Anne White made history when she took off her tracksuit to reveal a white body suit in her first round match at Wimbledon in 1985. Pam Shriver and Anne White had split sets when they were forced to stop due to rain. The umpire required that White return the next day in a more “appropriate” outfit.
Anna Kournikova 2002
It’s not very hard to figure out why Anna Kournikova is one of the most well-known tennis players without ever having won a major. She is drop dead gorgeous, and she tended to wear skin-tight skimpy outfits. For example, take this curve-hugging skirt and shirt that she wore in 2002.
Maria Sharapova 2008
Maria Sharapova changed the game when she showed up at the 2008 Wimbledon in a tuxedo-inspired shirt and shorts. Since then, many players, Serena included, have been trying to compete and beat this ensemble. While I’m usually not a fan of the more outrageous tennis styles, I can’t help but love this outfit.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands 2011
Many jaws dropped when Bethanie Mattek-Sands stepped onto the court in this tassled tennis ball jacket. While incredibly unattractive, I have to give her props for embracing and owning the look!
Look out for our 2015 Wimbledon fashion favorites coming next week!
