Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic both take Arthur Ashe Stadium today, and we are expecting both to easily make it to the next round. Not everyone will be on cruise control this first day though. Here are the tough US Open first round matches to watch today:
Ana Ivanovic vs Dominika Cibulkova
Cibulkova does everything she can to make up for her shorter stature. She even had some great runs only a few years back. Honestly, this match all comes down to how Ivanovic and her forehand are feeling. When she’s on, she’s unstoppable (except against Serena of course).
Mardy Fish vs Marco Cecchinato
It’s Mardy Fish’s last appearance in an ATP tournament. He will retire after this US Open. We wish him luck and a good run in the next two weeks!
Rafael Nadal vs Borna Coric
The two have only met each other once, at last year’s Basel, and the 18 year-old Coric actually came out on top. Nadal hasn’t had a great year, and this matchup will only put more pressure on him. These two will be the last match on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Sloane Stephens vs Coco Vandeweghe
What nasty luck! Two of our favorite Americans have to face each other in the first round. Surprisingly, Coco is leading in their head to head, though only by one match. Who are you rooting for?
Eugenie Bouchard vs Alison Riske
Bouchard’s 2015 track record must be making American Alison Riske feel pretty good about this matchup. Will Bouchard finally pull herself together or will we see yet another first day exit from the Canadian.
