The men’s matches are just getting under way today while the women deiced who would play in the semifinal yesterday. For once on the women’s side of the draw there were not many surprises, which also includes disappointment for American tennis fans.
Biggest Upset
On a day where most of the top seeds won we’ll have to settle for a 20 seed over a 15 seed for our biggest upset. Garbine Muguruza defeated Timea Bacsinszky Tuesday in straights which give the Spaniard her first semifinal appearance in her young career. Muguruza announced herself on the world stage last year after making a upset-laden quarterfinal run at the French Open. She’ll be facing off against Agnieszka Radwanska (who took down American Madison Keys) whom she has beaten that last two times they have faced off.

Best Match
The 5-setter between Maria Sharapova and Coco Vandeweghe had its ups and downs but it had a thrilling second set tie break that kept the match going. The young American was not shy about pumping up the crowd during her second set rally, which saw her recover from a break down to take the tie break. Vandeweghe showed real grit throughout the match but Maria, per usual, was able to wear her opponent down. Either way, it was a good run by Vandeweghe and she showed real resilience that should serve her well going forward.

Title Watch
The two favorites, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, both grinded out typical 3 set matches on route the semifinals. At this point something has to give and don’t be surprised if Serena Williams continues her dominance over Maria. Serena is 17-2 all time against MAria, which includes an unprecedented 16 straight victories. Maria is known to give herself the frequent “come on!” throughout a match, and she’ll need to keep herself pumped up if she wants to come out on top.

What to Watch for Day 9
Murray and Federer take on two surprise quarterfinalists in the form of Canadian Vasek Pospisil and Frenchman Gilles Simon respectively, while Novak Djokovic takes on US Open Champion (9) Marin Cilic and Stan Wawrinka takes on (21) Richard Gasquet. I could see Cilic giving Djokovic some issues, especially considering how he fared against another big server in Kevin Anderson last round, but with the semifinal so close don’t expect any of the top four to pull any punches. I fully expect to see a stacked semifinal Friday.
