Comparing Aspiring Grand Slam Winners and Aspiring Presidents

To celebrate of President’s Day today we’re going to have a bit of fun. We wanted to not only give shout outs to the politicians vying for the ultimate political breakthrough of becoming President but also compare them to a few players who have yet to make the ultimate tennis breakthrough, winning a grand slam. We’re breaking down racial barriers and bridging generational gaps as we help you make sense of each presidential candidate by offering up a aspiring tennis champ equivalent.

Bernie Sander/Gael Monfils

Just hear me out. Both captivate the imagination of the younger generation, one with promises of free education, the other with acrobatic tweeners. Tennis fans would love to see Monfils win a Grand Slam but admit there isn’t much of a chance, while democrats would love to see Bernie ride this wave to victory but often admit they have a hard time seeing him end up in the white house. Both are interesting players in theory but may leave people playing a game of “what if?”.

Donald Trump/Nick Kyrgios

Brash, unapologetic and downright polarizing. Kyrgios’ tennis game and Trumps political aspirations are both catching up to their legendary mouths. Even though you wouldn’t say Kyrgios is a favorite at any of the Grand Slams he enters just yet, all you have to do is look at Trump’s poll numbers a few months ago to see what a meteoric rise looks like. Whether they’re anything more than a damn good headline, only time will tell.

Hillary Clinton/Caroline Wozniacki

Both have experience in the prime time (Woz has two Grand Slam finals appearances, Hillary ran a competitive presdiential campaign in 2008) and have are not afraid to share the limelight with a powerful man (Rory McIlroy former #1 golfer in the world, and Bill Clinton who you know). Wozniacki was once world number #1 but couldn’t get over that Grand Slam hump while Clinton looked was the firm favorite a few months ago but is far from a sure thing now.

Ted Cruz/Vasek Pospisil

They were both born in Canada.

Marco Rubio/Kei Nishikori

Marco Rubio has long been touted as the republican savior while Kei Nishikori has the expectations of the entire country of Japan squarely on his shoulders. These young guns have all the makings of a contender but have been up and down in recent showings. An early round loss, an early concession speech, a Grand Slam victory or a Republican nomination. None of these outcomes would be shocking results for these two.

John Kasich/Martin Klizan

Did you know that Martin Klizan is creeping on the top 25 and he just won the indoor World Tennis Tournament this past weekend? Did you know that John Kasich came in a surprising second in the New Hampshire primary? These two relatively unknown “K” men might not be the most inspiring individuals but not acknowledging them would be doing them a disservice.
